Sticks and stones may break our bones. But they probably won’t
Melissa Lennig’s view is that playing outside teaches children to manage their limitations, as well as encouraging them to develop play ideas of their own. Sticks and stones, after all, are the original tools used by mankind.
The book is divided into three sections: logs, sticks, and rocks. Each section contains project ideas, with clear visual instructions and step-by-step instructions. The projects begin with a materials list and safety tips that outline where adult supervision is required.
Simpler ideas include using natural objects to make outdoor art. I was also tickled by the idea of creating a tic-tac-toe board with sticks and playing outside with rocks and stick crosses. More complex suggestions include a stick catapult and dam construction.
There is a great range of activities that promote different areas of learning and fun. Bug hotels and birds feeders encourage a love of nature. Ochre paint and leaf printing on to rocks will appeal to children with a love of art. There’s plenty of active play too, from bouncing on a log seesaw to crossing a steam by identifying stepping-stones. Lenning’s philosophy is that no matter where you live there is always an adventure to be had. For somebody who lives in the middle of a city, some of these activities will be out of reach, but playing with sticks and pebbles indoors might encourage youngsters to create outdoor activities of their own. If a massive log seesaw is out of the question, for example, could sticks not be used to create seesaw for Playmobil or Lego figures?
With children around the globe trapped indoors due to the COVID-19 outbreak, it may seem strange that I am recommending a book about outdoor play. I couldn’t be more serious. Not all of these activities need to happen outdoors. Sticks and stones can be collected up and brought inside for nature play. Additionally, many countries allowing an hour of exercise but playparks are closed and children are unable to play with their friends. Encouraging creativity, exploration and enjoyment within the outdoors has never been more important.
I am inspired by the book’s approach to outdoor play. The opportunities for learning and fun offered by nature are too numerous to miss. Sticks And Stones reminds us that every environment is a rich playground ready to explore.
